Loose Parts Play At Lyonsdown

Mrs Jenner and the girls in Year 6 held a wonderfully informative Whole School Assembly relating to our loose parts play equipment in the garden area. Using the large screen in the School Hall and showing photographs and video of the play area in action, the Year 6 girls asked the audience questions like, ‘what can we do with these?’ and, ‘what are the dangers of using these, like this?’ The younger girls threw their arms in the air, hoping to get picked to answer the questions. A video showing what was safe, and what was unsafe was played for all to digest; again, the Year 6 girls questioned the audience, ‘is this safe?’ They all showed just how knowledgeable they are about safety. The older girls demonstrated playing with a long piece of rope and how to play with it safely without danger; everyone was fully engaged and clearly understood the risk of unsafe play.

We also have some new and exciting resources that have been added to the main playground area for all the girls to enjoy during break time. These have certainly been an enormous success with all the Year groups, we want to thank the FLS for helping to fund this exciting equipment range; there will be more pieces to follow!

Mrs Jenner bought the Assembly to a close by reinforcing that the most crucial part of loose parts play was HAVING FUN!!

It has been wonderful to observe the open-ended creative play and den-building that the children have enjoyed since the arrival of the loose parts materials. High-quality play is essential in a child’s education, and at Lyonsdown, we are committed to making this available to all our girls.
